Private Frederick Leslie Marshall (Service No:2870) enlisted in the AIF on 15 July 1915 with 6/26th Infantry Battalion and embarked ex Melbourne on 27 October 1915 on board HMAT Ulysses. Private Marshall served in France and was attached to 12th Infantry Battalion when he was WiA on 4 June 1918 (shell wound to the shoulder). In December that year he was hospitalised with Influenza and on 6 October 1919 embarked for the RTA on board HT Pakeha. Private Marshall was Discharged on 16 January 1920.
Born in 1895 in Melbourne Victoria, Fred was the youngest of five children (one of two surviving infancy) of John William Marshall (b1865 in New Zealand) and Mary Ann Taylor (b1867 in Daylesford, Victoria). John (a Butcher) and Mary married in 1890 in Melbourne Victoria where they settled and raised their family. John died in 1895.
Fred worked as a Leather Dresser in Melbourne before enlisting in the AIF - older sibling Jack (Service No:1561) served with 8th Battalion. Following his Discharge in 1919 Fred settled in Melbourne where he worked as a Tanner, Printer, Labourer and Manufacturer. Fred died in 1962.
