John DUGGAN
John Duggan was born at Lauriston, near Kyneton in 1886 and was working as a labourer in the Sunbury area when he enlisted on 11/5/1915 for WW1. He was married to Sarah and they lived in Brook Street Sunbury.
He trained at the Broadmeadows Camp and left Australia as part of the 14th Battalion on 10/8/1915 aboard HMAT Persia.
He landed at Gallipoli on 24/10/1915, was posted to D Company and served until 26/11/15 when he was evacuated sick with mumps. He rejoined his unit in time for the evacuation and arrived in Alexandria on 6/1/1916.
The 14th Battalion left Alexandria on 1/6/1916 and arrived in Marseilles on 7/6/1916. After an overland train trip they arrived at Baillieul on 10/6/1916.
The Battalion fought at Pozieres Ridge and Mouquet Farm before being sent to the Somme area on 1/9/1916. There they were used as a labour battalion both day and night and on October 2 1916, while on night works John Duggan was killed. He was the only man in his Battalion to be killed that day.
He was buried the next day at Chester Farm Cemetery, just south of Ypres.

John Duggan was a 28yo farm labourer who enlisted on 11/5/1915 in Melbourne. John lived and worked in Sunbury. His next of kin was his wife, Sarah Duggan of Brook Street, Sunbury.
After training he left Australia on 10/8/1915 as part of the 14th Battalion. He served on Gallipoli and later on the Western Front.
He was killed in action on 2/10/1916 while fighting in the Ypres Salient.
He is buried at the Chester Farm Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
In 1921 his widow was living in Alexandra Street, Northcote.
