Biography contributed by Lorraine McMahon

John Wilson enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 31 August 1915 and was assigned to the 30th Battalion in the rank of Private. He arrived in France around 6 September 1916. During the year 1918, he experienced multiple instances of being gassed, necessitating medical care, with the final treatment occurring around 9 June 1918. He rejoined his unit on 6 July 1918 and served as a runner for the Battalion on 28 August 1918. While fulfilling this role, he was delivering a message to the Platoon Commander when he sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was subsequently evacuated to the Casualty Clearing Station at Decure. He succumbed to his injuries.[1]

Private Wilson was born on 30 March 1893 in Lithgow, NSW, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Wilson.  Prior to enlisting, he had married Annie May Whan on 11 January 1915 in Kurri Kurri, NSW.  They welcomed a daughter, Iris on 14 July 1915. [2]   His wife and daughter were living in Rawson Street, Kurri Kurri, NSW, when they were advised of his death.[3]
