George Henry Albert Mazey was known as 'Finn' to his brothers and sisters. His mother and father had passed away almost ten years before he enlisted in 1915. He was born and raised in the Recherche Bay area, which is about as far south as you can go in Tasmania, down beyond the Huon Valley.
He joined the 12th Battalion but was transferred to the 52nd Battalion prior to landing in France. He was badly wounded during Australia's last attack on Mouquet Farm, 3 September 1916. Although removed to a Casualty Clearing Station, he died the next day, from a gunshot wound to his arm or shoulder.
His eldest half-sister, Emily Christina Donoghue, received his medals and effects. She also received much of his deferred pay and war gratuity, after a long fight as it appears she raised George Mazey for much of his short life.
