105 years ago today, on the 9th April 1918, Private Clarence Harold Pearce, 59th Battalion (Reg No-2960), shipping clerk from "Greyslan", 43 Cleary Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, Died of Wounds at 4.30 A.M. at the 20th Casualty Clearing Station, France, age 27.
Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 20th April 1890 to Henry (Harry) Gray (died?) and Emma Jane Pearce (born 20.2.1854, Bristol, England, died 14.10.1928, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 74), Clarence enlisted on the 18th September 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A19 Afric on the 3rd November 1916.
Admitted to hospital 8.5.1917 (trench fever).
Wounded in action - 5.4.1918 (GSW head, fractured skull, dangerously ill).
Clarence is resting at Vignacourt British Cemetery, France. Plot I Row A Grave 11.
Mr. Pearce’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Wickham (Dangar Street) Methodist Church Roll of Honour, Teralba Public School Roll of Honour, West Wallsend Methodist Church Roll of Honour, Cessnock War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
