Herbert Russell Oborn was born on 29 July 1884, in Jamestown, South Australia. His next of kin was his mother – Mrs Alice H. Oborn – and his father was Thomas Symons Oborn, who died in 1913. His mother was from the West Indies and was born in 1861 and died in 1943. Herbert Oborn was a school master before he went to war. He lived in Tea Tree Gully and was single.
Herbert Oborn enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces as a Private in 1905 in Australian Light Horses. He was then a Lieutenant and Captain, Cadets from 1905 to 1913. He was 2nd Lieutenant in the A Troop & B Troop Squadron 23rd Light Horse Regiment from 1913 to 1914.
Herbert Oborn enlisted with 3rd Light Horse Regiment, 6th Reinforcement 27th November 1914. He served in Egypt and Gallipoli. He unit the unit at Gallipoli on 16th September 1915 and remained there until the evacuation of Gallipoli 20 December 1915. He joined the Western Frontier Force 29th December 1915 and was promoted to Lieutenant 1st March 1916.
He was wounded in action 1 June 1916 at Kantara receiving bullet wound in the thigh
He was admitted to 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance and moved to the 31st General Hospital in Port Said. He was eventually transferred to convalescent at a General Hospital in Alexandria, and then the Convalescent Hospital at Ras el Tin at the start of July, He rejoined his unit in Romani 6th August 1916.
Oborn returned to the 31st General Hospital in Port Said hospital on 7th October 1916 with tonsillitis. He was discharged to duty 8th November 1916 and before rejoining his unit he married Isabel Lucy Esther Steam at St Mark’s Church, Alexandria, on 14 November 1916.
He then rejoined his unit in Arnussi on 23 November 1916. He was then assigned to C Squadron, 1st Light Horse Training Regiment as a 1st Class instructor.
Oborn returned to Australia on board HT Wilshire 20th August 1918 and was discharged 19th October 1918
When he died 14th February 1953 aged 68, he left a widow, 3 sons, and 3 daughters.
