War Service/Promotions: On the trip over he contracted measles and was hospitalised from 25 August 1916 until 3 September 1916. He disembarked in Plymouth, Devon, England, on 25 September 1916. Then proceeded overseas per SS Gnuard, to Etaples, France, 19 November 1916. He saw service in France, but was sent from there on 2 February, 1917, to the 4th Cadet Battalion, at New College, Oxford, England, where he gained his commission to 2nd Lieutenant - Unit INF21,
31 May 1917. He returned to France 21 June 1917 and was wounded at Broodseinde Ridge on
4 October 1917 with a gunshot wound to face and left arm, and admitted to hospital in Etaples, France. He was evacuated back to England and admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth. He was promoted to Lieutenant - Unit INF21, 19 October 1917 while in hospital. Admitted to Salisbury Isolation Hospital, Wiltshire, England, with diphtheria on 12 November 1918, and discharged as permanently unfit for active service. Then appointed messing officer and W.M. - 5th Training Battalion - until the Armistice.
Place of Wounding: Gunshot wound left arm and face (severe), 4 October 1917, Belgium.
Fate: Returned to Australia per SS Kildonan Castle, 21 March 1919. He never married.
Place of Death: 8 April 1974, Sydney Adventist Hospital, Wahroonga, NSW

SIDNEY HUNGERFORD CHAPMAN was born 1st May, 1888, at Wangaratta, Victoria. His father is Mr. Robert Edward Chapman, late Manager of the Ballarat Branch of the Bank, and his mother, Mrs. Bessie Chapman. He was educated at the Ballarat College and joined the Bank’s service at Geelong, Victoria, on 1st June, 1905. He was transferred to Beechworth, as ledger-keeper, in October, 1909; to Culcairn, as assistant, in November, 1910, and to Moama, as teller, in December, 1912.

Sidney Hungerford Chapman enlisted in the A.I.F, on 10th October, 1915, and left Australia on 1st August, 1916, as a member of the 21st Battalion. He saw service in France, but was sent from there in January, 1917, to the 4th Cadet Battalion, at New College, Oxford, where he gained his commission at the end of the following May. He returned to France in June and was wounded at Broodseinde Ridge on 4th October, 1917. He was promoted to lieutenant in the following month while in hospital. He was transferred from the hospital at Etaples to Wandsworth and discharged as permanently unfit for active service. He was then appointed “messing officer” and Q.M. of the 5 th Training Battalion until the Armistice.
