Private Leon Amourin, of the 6th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, only joined the 3rd Battalion on Gallipoli a few days before the Battle of Lone Pine, the most savage and ferocious close-quarters engagement that took place in the Gallipoli campaign.
The trench fight lasted for over five days and at some stage Leon Amourin was badly wounded. He was evacuated to the hospital ship ‘Dunluce Castle’ where his left leg was amputated and he was taken to Malta. He was evacuated to England during October 1915 and spent most of 1916 in hospital. He was eventually returned to Australia during January 1917, fitted with an artificial leg.
Leon was a son of Madame Borne, of Milson's Point, Sydney, New South Wales. He was born in New Caledonia, and prior to enlisting he resided in Sydney, where he was engaged as a wool classer. It was reported that all the male members of the wounded soldier's family are in the military forces. His step-father and step-brother are both members of the French army, to join which they left Sydney at the beginning of the war. The former is an officer in charge of a reserve force stationed at St. Andre. One of his sons, Albert Borne, was wounded at Ypres fighting with the French. Leon’s brother, Gaston Amourin enlisted the Australian Medical Corps A.M.C. and another brother, Alfred Amourin also served with the 3rd Battalion.
