Vaino Hillel Thomas Liljeblad - Service Number: 28018
On 4th of January 1898, Vaino Hillel Thomas Liljeblad was born in Balmain South, New South Wales, Australia. Liljeblad’s father, Frederik Hillel Liljeblad (1849-1924),(4) was a master mariner (a sea captain) of the British Merchant Navy between 1882-1914, where he piloted the British squadron of warships during the 1884 declaration of the British Protectorate of New Guinea. He also navigated ships for the London Missionary Society. While Liljeblad’s father was a Finnish immigrant,(5) his mother, Charlotte Liljeblad (1865-1935) was originally from a Protestant English family.(6) Liljeblad had three sisters and two brothers.(7) Liljeblad’s entire family lived in Rozelle, Sydney, where most of his childhood was spent. He attended many educational facilities including Rozelle Public School (1904-1910), Sydney Technical High School (1911-1914) and Sydney Technical College (1915-1916). In the middle of highschool, he apprenticed as a Linotype operator in 1913 to John Fairfax and Sons,(8) which later purchased Sydney Morning Herald.(9) In Sydney Technical High School, Liljeblad studied subjects such as Maths, English, History, Geography, Chemistry, Drawing, Carpentry and Fitting+Turning. In his 1911 class, he came 12th in his overall grade, which was considered an excellent achievement.(10) After graduating from high school, he attended Sydney Technical College,(11) which was a university that housed many science and engineering professions.(12)
During World War One, Liljeblad enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in April 1916.(13) During enlistment, Liljeblad became a Driver as the 7th Reinforcement of the 4th Divisional Ammunition Column.(15) Drivers were responsible for pulling teams of horses equipped with guns.(16) He was promoted through the ranks to Acting Sergeant while training in Australia.

He was invalided to England for treatment, and finally returned to Australia on 13th of March 1918.(25)
