Eldest son of Cr. F.W. FAIR, J.P. of Shepparton, Vic.
Husband of Nettie FAIR, 400 Burnley Street, Richmond, Vic.
The late Private Frederick Rowland Fair (eldest son of Cr. F.W. Fair, J.P., of Shepparton, and Mrs. Fair), whose death in battle in Northern France was reported in last Monday's 'Advertiser' was 24 years of age. Seven years ago when enterning a competitive examination, Commonwealth Public Service, he topped the candidates entering from all parts of Australia - a very high distinction to achieve; and then joining the postal service, gae further proofs of his ability and energy. Mr. Fair was first attaced to the Post Office at Shepparton; from that he was transferred successively to Warragul, Richmond, and the General Post Office, Melbourne. After that he was in charge at Box Hill; was subsequently offered the charge at Bright, but declined; and being again transferred to the General Post Office, he being a student at Hassett's Colllege, had only one more examination to pass for an accountancy certificate when he enlisted. Cr. and Mrs. Fair have been receiving many letters and telegrams of sympathy, one of them coming on Tuesday morning from Mr. Hassett.
Cr. Fair has received the following letter from Mr. E.W. Turnbull, Hon. Secretary, Victorian Post and Telegraph Association, Melbourne, dated August 23rd: Dear Mr. Fair, on behalf of the members of the Victorian Post and Telegraph Association, and myself, I beg to tender to Mrs. Fair, yourself and family, our very deep regret in the death of your son. It will, no doubt, be some consolation toyou toknown Fred was highly esteemed for his manliness by is colleagues of the Melbourne Telegraph Office, who sincerely mourn the loss of a trud and upright comrade.
