Hugh Reginald Hull, aged 19, enlisted in the AIF at Ballarat on 24 January 1916. He embarked overseas on 7 March and, upon his arrival in Egypt, was transferred to the 5th Divisional Ammunition Column as a Driver, on 17 April 1916. This meant he would have overseen a team of horses or mules. He left Egypt and arrived in France on 29 June.
Not long after, he was involved in supplying ammunition to the 5th Division field artillery during the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 and then later, in the front lines around Flers during November 1916.
On 19 June 1917, he joined the Australian Veterinary Hospital at Calais for four months, before he was transferred to the 14th Field Artillery Brigade, as a Gunner, on 31 October 1917.
He saw action around Ypres in November 1917, and then at the Battles of Hamel (July 1918), Amiens (August 1918) and the Hindenburg Line (September 1918) during the British offensives of that year.
He departed England for Australia on 22 May 1919, however his disembarkation and discharge dates are unknown.
