Son of Andrew and Rhonda Stewart of, Wadderin, Bruce Rock, WA.

Brother of Henry James Stewart who was killed in action on 12 October 1917 while serving with the 39th Battalion and was buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery. Plot XX111, Row F, Grave 17

William John Stewart was born in Clydebank, Scotland on the 23.8.1897. The Stewarts arrived in Australia from Scotland when William was 19 and they moved to Wadderin, via Bruce Rock, where he worked as a storekeeper. His denomination was Church of England and he was described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a chest measurement of 33 – 35 inches, dark complexion, grey eyes and dark brown hair. Next of kin was his father, Andrew and his mother was Rhoda, née Bennett. William enlisted, aged 23 years 10 months on the 9.6.1915 at Blackboy Hill and was a Private, Service number 2451, with the 11th Infantry Battalion D Company.  William embarked on HMT Berrima to the Dardanelles on the 1.8.15 and died a week later at Gallipoli. He was buried at Shell Green, Plot 2, Row 1 Grave 43. His brother, Henry James Stewart Service Number 2894, died in Belgium on the 12.10.1917.
