Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

It seems that Kennedy was born in Melbourne and raised in Scotland. His mother stated on his roll of honour form that he returned to Australia during 1911. His father was a sculptor and had passed away in Scotland that year. Andrew’s brother William was a mason, and was working on the Guildford Grammar School Chapel in Western Australia when he enlisted. Andrew may have been labouring for him.

Andrew Kennedy was one the early recruits for the 11th Battalion. He served at the Anzac Landing until wounded in the leg 6 July 1915. He was evacuated to Malta but rejoined his battalion on Gallipoli a few weeks later. He was again evacuated sick during September 1915.

Kennedy was wounded in action (2nd time) during fierce fighting at Pozieres, when he received a gunshot wound to his right thigh on 27 July 1916. He was transferred to England for treatment and did not rejoin his unit until late 1917. He suffered another bout of trench fever and was again evacuated to England over the New Year period. He rejoined his battalion during April 1918 and was killed in action during the defence of Hazebrouck the same month.

His brother, 314 Pte. William Murray Stewart Kennedy 11th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Armentieres 30 May 1916, aged 25.
