Oswald Sagasser Reg.No. 1617 born 1892 was the youngest son of Oswald and Ann Maria. He had two older brothers Anton (1884) and Nicholas (1888). Oswald (Snr) married Anna Brown in 1883 and the family lived at Sandhurst, before moving to Melbourne and then Korumburra by 1890. In 1891 Oswald purchased at Auction Lot 38, adjoining the Allambee Estate. Lot 38 was originally settled by William Bawden in 1878. It was here that Oswald (jnr) was born in 1892. Both Anna and Oswald died in 1911, Anna in August and Oswald November. The Sagasser brothers (Oswald and Nicholas) continued to run the farm and work as contractors in the area.

Oswald aged 23 enlisted on 19th July 1915. He was described as 5’10”, fair complexion, fair hair and blue eyes. Following training in Seymour he was posted to the 8th Infantry Brigade, 31st Battalion. The unit embarked at Brisbane per H.M.A.T. A 62 Wandilla 9th November 1915 bound for Egypt. 31st January 1916 he was admitted to No. 1 A.S. Hospital Ismailia with mumps. He rejoined the unit on 6th March and on the 15th was transferred to 5th Divisional Artillery and Taken on Strength 25th Howitzer Brigade and posted to the 115th Battery. 18th June 1916 the unit embarked Alexandria on H.T.Georgion for Marseilles, France. In July 1916 he was transferred to the 114th Battery, before being transferred to the 14th Field Artillery Brigade. On the 17th August 1917 he was promoted to temporary Bombardier, becoming substantive on the 24th August and on the 4th October promoted to temporary Corporal, being made substantive 14th October. 7th November 1917 he was wounded in action and admitted to No 22 General Hospital with a gunshot wound to his right arm. He was transferred back to England and treated at Birmingham 10th – 28th November, before being transferred to Hurdcott for convalescence. February 1918 he was declared fit and proceeded overseas on 10th February, marching in to Rouelles 14th February 1918. He rejoined his unit, 14th Field Artillery on 28th February 1918. 23rd June he was gassed at Corbie, Somme, France and admitted to the Field Hospital for treatment. He was returned to England and treated at Red Cross Hospital Christchurch, before being transferred to Cosham and Dartford. He was discharged from hospital 28th November 1918 to convalesce before being returned to Australia, departing 12th December 1918 on H.T. Nestor.

He was discharged as permanently unfit with Total Incapacity due to Gas Poisoning and shell shock. Oswald died at the Caulfield Military Hospital 30th July 1919 and is buried in the Yarragon Cemetery.
