John was the eldest of five children of Johan August Hermann Gabriel (b1838 in Germany) and his second wife Augusta (Ulrike) Louise Ulrike Frieberg (nee Lubke; b1867 in Germany). Johan arrived in Brisbane QLD with his family in 1878 on board the Lammershagen, and was Naturalised at Boonah, Ipswich QLD in 1880. Ulrike arrived with her first husband and family in 1881. Following the deaths of their first spouses, Johan and Ulrike married in 1888 in Boonah, Ipswich QLD where hey raised their family and Johan was a Farmer.

John was a Farm Labourer in Boonah, Ipswich when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:2574A) in July 1916. He was attached to 5/41st Battalion when he embarked from Brisbane on 17 November 1916, and 'Failed to re-embark at Fremantle but since apprehended and fined ... (National Archives Australia). John embarked in Fremantle in December 1916 per A35 Berrima. He was KiA in Belgium in September 1917.

In 1920, shortly before her death, his mother Ulrike wrote to the Army "I beg you to put me a cross on the grave ... and underneath the cross the words In memory of the Dearly Loved son of Mrs U Gabriel of Templin aged 28 years' (National Archives Australia).
