William Charles Jones enlisted in the 12th Battalion during mid-1915. He was transferred to the 52nd Battalion during the doubling of the AIF in Egypt in Egypt in 1916. He was badly wounded during the heavy fighting at Mouquet Farm on 3 September 1916. He was evacuated to England with a gunshot wound to the buttock.
He was admitted to hospital in Newport, England and was there for several months. Sent back to France he rejoined the 52nd Battalion on 12 April 1917. He was wounded for a second time on 24 April 1918, a shrapnel wound to head and ear, and again evacuated to England.
When he was sent back to France during August 1918 the 52nd Battalion no longer existed due to it being disbanded by the AIF. William served with the 42nd and 50th Battalions until he was sent back to England during February 1919. Two weeks later, on 24 February 1919, he married a Gladys Spanwick of Newport, England, in her home town. William had spent time wounded there during 1916, and probably met his future wife at this time.
William returned to Australia with his new wife during July 1919. They both passed away during the 1970’s and are buried together in the Perth General Cemetery, Tasmania.
