64 years ago today, on the 8th October 1960, Sapper James Egan, referred to as Snowy, 1st Australian Tunnelling Company (Reg No-5533), labourer and motor driver from 10 Buchanan Street, Merewether, New South Wales and Smith Street, The Junction, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. CATHOLIC 2-63. 46.
Born at Merewether, New South Wales on the 9th August 1888 to Michael Patrick, died 14.3.1902, Stockton, N.S.W., age 59, buried at CATHOLIC 1-K Com. 13, from 60 Patrick Street, The Junction, N.S.W., and Mary Ann Egan nee Blundell, died 16.5.1929, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 78, sleeping at CATHOLIC 1-K Com. 13, from 60 Patrick Street, The Junction, N.S.W. and 46 Patrick Street, The Junction, N.S.W.; husband of Edith Eileen Egan nee Toomey, married 1914, Merewether, N.S.W., died 8.8.1993, district unknown, age 97, sleeping here, Snowy enlisted on the 15th May 1916 with the Tunnelling Companies, September 1916 to February 1918 Reinforcements, at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on the 25th October 1916.
Proceeded on leave from 14.9.1918 to 2.10.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 31.5.1919.
Snowy arrived home on the 12th July 1919, being discharged on the 21st August 1919.
Mr. Egan’s name has been inscribed on the Junction Soldiers' Memorial, Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour, Merewether U.A.O. Druids (Rock of Hope branch) Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Snowy’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Name not inscribed on headstone. Wooden cross erected - 1.6.2014. I submitted an application to DVA October 2020 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at the gravesite, and this was accepted June 2021. Completed September 2021. Younger brother Alfred, born 6.1.1891, Merewether, New South Wales, married tailor from 16 Dumaresque Street, Cooks Hill (Hamilton East), New South Wales, father of Leslie M Egan, born ? ? 1915, died?, enlisted 10.3.1916, 34th Battalion, Reg No-1813, KIA 15.6.1918, Villers Bretonneux, age 27. No memorial inscription at parent's gravesite. Memorial cross placed at the gravesite -1.6.2014. CATHOLIC 1-K Com. 13.
