Michael (Mike) was the second of four children of Joh Heffernan (born 1862) and Mary Buckley (born 1864 in Toodyay, WA). John and Mary married in 1886 in Guildford, WA.

Mike was a Jockey living Fremantle with his brother William Benedict, also a Jockey, when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915, serving with 48th Battalion as a Private (Service No: 4619). Mike was WIA in France in 1916 and was Discharged in October 1917. Brother William Benedict also served in the AIF as a Private (Service No: 1872).

Mike married Eva Emily Wells (born 1886 in Guildford WA) in 1912 in Fremantle WA. Returning fro WWI, Mick and Eva lived in Northam WA where Mike initially worked as a Farm Hand, then as a Farmer and later as a Labourer until Eva's death in 1943.

In 1955 Mike married widow (Amy May Coultas (nee Street born 1884 in Adelaide, South Australia). Mike and Amy moved from Maylands in Perth to Guildford WA where Mike worked as a Stock Handler. Amy died in 1963 and Mike in 1968
