Originally from Hastings, England Pte Crigan was a gardener from Point Lonsdale, Victoria prior to enlistment and embarked with the 19th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Miltiades on 1 August 1916.

Later joining the 57th Battalion, he was promoted to Sergeant and returned to Australia on 15 April 1919.
