Joseph Blades was a young Englishman who had come out to Australia in around 1911. He was working on a farm near Kingaroy in Queensland when he enlisted. His brother, Lance Corporal William Webster Blades Lincolnshire Regiment, was killed in Belgium during August 1915 when fighting with the British forces.
