Brother of Private Cecil (Nobby) Harris, 55th Battalion, engineer (A. Goninan and Co., Limited), of 'Waitohi', Macquarie Street, Merewether, New South Wales and Henry Street, Cardiff, N.S.W., who Served in The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery, age 42. ANGLICAN 1-50. 90.

74 years ago today, on the Friday morning of the 8th October 1948, Driver Basil Harris, 2nd Australian Divisional Ammunition Column (Reg No-7800), apprentice engineer (A. Goninan and Co., Limited), from 'Waitohi', Macquarie Street, Merewether, New South Wales and 9 Park Street, Merewether, N.S.W., father of two (Basil, one daughter), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. ANGLICAN 1-08. 92.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 4th August 1895 to Albert Ernest and Hannah Harris nee Ralph; husband of Mildred Harris nee Allinson (married 1920, Merewether, N.S.W., died 1958, sleeping here), Basil enlisted August 1915 with the 5th Australian Field Artillery Brigade at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment.
Admitted to hospital 3.7.1916 (accidental sprain of right wrist).

Basil returned home June 1919, being discharged on the 3rd August 1919.

Mr. Harris’s name has been inscribed on the A. Goninan and Company Roll of Honour, Merewether St. Augustine's Church Roll of Honour and The Junction Soldiers' Monument (photos, unveiled on the 9th August 1919, 140 names originally inscribed, 143 names now inscribed, located at the corner of Kenrick Street, Glebe Road and Corlette Street, The Junction, N.S.W.). Mr. Harris was a member of the Newcastle Branch (1086) Grand United Order of Oddfellows, though his name is not inscribed on the Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of Basil’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 7/10/1948.
