Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

68 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 18th November 1952, 2nd Corporal Ernest Henry Drew, Provost Corps (Reg No-2605), butcher, labourer, carpenter, handyman, from 51 King Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and Seahampton, N.S.W., father of five, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 70. METHODIST 4-23. 52.

Born at Guildford, Surrey, England Jan-Mar 1882 to James Thomas and Emily Laura Drew nee Walden of 19 Chertsey Road, Woking, Surrey, England; husband of Emma Hedwig Drew nee Trueb (married Kensington, London 19.8.1919, died 1954), Ernest enlisted July 1915 with the 19th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 14.4.1916 (septic foot), and wounded in action - 17.8.1916 (GSW left forearm), Ernest returned home with Emma December 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 8th March 1920.

Mr Drew’s name not inscribed on the Newcastle & Northern District Branch Meat Workers' Union Honour Roll, or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I located Ernest resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so November 2015 I placed a cross to honour his service for God, King and Country.

Many thanks to Lynne Dalton for the extensive family history.

I will be asking for official commemoration.
Lest We Forget.
