Alfred Sledge (Service Nuimber 465) was born at Middlesborough, Yorkshire, England about August 1891. He worked in the Permanent Way Branch of the Railways as a labourer in the Lidcombe Workshops. serving in the 4th Australian Infantry Battalion. 

Sledge enlisted at Kensington on 24th August 1914 and gave his father, Christopher Sledge living in Richmond, England, as his next of kin. He also served in the Police Force in North Ryde Yorkshire, and and admitted to having been dismissed from that body for insubordination.

He was allotted to the 4th Battalion. He embarked HMAT ‘Euripides’ on 20th October 1914.

He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 19th May 1915. He was buried in Shrapnel Gully on the Gallipoli Peninsula by the Principal Chaplain W McKenzie on 27th May.

Sledge is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.
