Stanley IRONMONGER (Service Number 4815) was born on 22nd April 1893 at Luton, Bedfordshire, England. He began working as a locomotive cleaner at Murrurundi Locomotive Depot from April 1913. On 23rd April 1914 Ironmonger transferred to Eveleigh as a locomotive fireman. It was here that he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 9th November 1915. 

He enlisted at Casula on 29th November 1915. He was unmarried. He gave an uncle living in England as next of kin. He left Australia through Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Star of England’ on 8th March 1916. He was allotted to the 15th Reinforcements of the 12th Australian Infantry Battalion. ‘Star of England’ reached Egypt on 11th April. Ironmonger was soon transferred to the 4th Australian Pioneer Battalion. After two months further training, he embarked from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Forces and passed through Marseilles on 11th June to the frontline in France.

In November he was detached for duty with the 1st Anzac Headquarters where he remained for the rest of his service. He was romoted to Lance Corporal on 1st September 1916,

He was killed in action on 29th October 1916. 

He was buried in what was at the time known as ‘Lille Gate Cemetery’, but is now known as Ramparts Cemetery, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.
