Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

August was the eighth of nine children of Carl (Charlie) August Wilhelm Hingst (born 1862 in Germany) and Augusta Wilhelmina Luisa Loose (born 1862 in Germany). Charlie was eleven years of age when his family arrived in Maryborough, QLD on board the Alardus, and Augusta was twenty one years of age when she immigrated with her family, arriving on board the Roma. Charlie - a Farmer - and Augusta married in 1883 in Laidley, QLD. Charlie died in 1900 and Augusta remarried.

August was a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in January 1917 - he had served with the Citizens' Military Forces (11th Infantry Ipswich) and was a Member of the Redbank Rifle Club. August made a Statutory Declaration regarding his German heritage at Frasers Camp Hill at Enoggera in Brisbane, QLD. He had three tattoos - the Australian Coat of Arms, the British insignia surrounded by the word 'Brittania' and his name 'A W Hingst'.
