Short History
Evelyn was born on 13th February 1891 at Merryweather, New South Wales, the son of Stephen Edward Roberts and his wife, Margaret, nee Wilson.
On 17th November 1910 he married Violet Victoria Kathleen Booth.
Evelyn joined the AN&MEF on 11th August 1914 stating that he was a labourer. He was allocated to G Company. He returned from Rabaul and was discharged on 4th March 1915 having completed 206 days service.
Four days later he enlisted in the 19th Battalion, AIF, regimental number 311 and departed Sydney on 25th June aboard the CERAMIC, arriving in Alexandria on 23rd July 1915. He departed Alexandria on 16th August aboard the SATURNIA, arriving on Gallipoli on 21st August, where he bivouacked at Reserve Gully.
With his battalion, he left Gallipoli on 20th December arriving in Alexandria, via Mudros, on 7th Jan 1916. Again, with his battalion he went to Marseilles in March 1916 and was transferred to the 5th Machine Gun Company on 21st August 1916.
On 24th December 1916 he was evacuated to England with Trench Feet and influenza and did not return to France.
On 19th April 1918 he was transferred to the Provost Corps and left England on the MAHANA on 23rd Sept 1919, arriving back in Australia on 12th November. He was discharged from the AIF on 26th January 1920. Later in that year his wife, Violet died.
In 1928 he married Dulcie Swadling at Annandale and on 5th October 1939 he again enlisted and was posted to the 3rd Garrison Battalion. His service number was N68930 and he was discharged on 21st February 1940
Evelyn died on 5th March 1946 and is buried at the Matraville Cemetery
