Erle was one of three brothers, two who died during WW1 and one who died during WW2. They were the sons of Walter Herbert and Amy Selina Weiss. Erle’s Dad was the headmaster of Erina Public School, near Gosford NSW.
His elder brother 3578 Pte. Frederick Alfred Weiss 53rd Battalion was killed in action at Fromelles 19 July 1916, aged 23.
Erle enlisted in 1915 he sailed from Sydney during January 1916, and reached France the following April. He passed through all engagements unwounded until the end of 1917 when he was severely gassed and evacuated to England. After a period in hospital, he returned to France June 1918, and died on 9 August 1918, when a shell struck near his gun position, killing him instantly. Originally buried in the Bayonvillers British Cemetery his remains were shifted to Heath Cemetery during 1920.
Another younger brother, who was only 8 years of age when Erle died, NX36483 Private Harry Blanch Weiss, 2/30 Battalion was taken prisoner of war of the Japanese and died of illness whilst in captivity in Thailand on 30 September 1943, aged 33.
