Son of Samuel Usher and Annie Usher nee Hicks of Mitchell Street, St Kilda, Victoria. Brother of Leslie Norman James Usher MM who returned to Australia on 26 August 1919 having served with the 3rd Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 21 March 1919 aboard HT Kildonian Castle disembarking on 7 May 1919
