26 Sep 1917: | Honoured Military Medal, Polygon Wood, "At Polygon Wood on 26th September, 1917, telephone communication broke down early in the day, and runners had to be used exclusively. Many runners became casualties, so that those remaining had to work very hard. During the whole of 26th and 27th September, Private HANNAFORD carried numerous messages through heavy enemy barrages and machine gun fire, and on two occasions through a gas shell barrage. On 27th September, our own heavy artillery shelled us, and Private HANNAFORD carried a message through our own and the enemy's barrage to have the artilleries shooting rectified." | |

"...558 Private George Brown Hannaford, B Company, 29th Battalion, of North Gippsland, Vic. Pte Hannaford enlisted on 10 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ascanius on 10 November 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 17 December 1917 and returned to Australia on 8 May 1919 as a member of the 32nd Battalion." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
