Biography contributed by Joan Holloway
Jack enrolled 1 March 1916, aged 37, keen to serve his country but unsure if he would be accepted because of his weak lungs. Family legend was that he somehow got a mate to stand in for his medical; in any case, the need for fresh recruits was urgent at the time. Jack had country experience working with horses & served in France as Driver, 14th Field Ambulance. Unfortunately, he succumbed to influenza & was hospitalised; eventually discharged as medically unfit, he was repatriated & afterwards classified as TPI. During the Depression years he managed to find part-time work to support his family & also (as he put it) serve his society: with his upright bearing, respectable & neat attire, & his pleasant & courteous manner, he was able to serve for years as a lift driver for one of the good city stores (possibly Finneys') - in those days, the lift driver sat on a stool near the controls & had an important PR role in greeting customers, advising them what was on each store level & through careful driving of the lift ensuring them a safe & comfortable ride. He had an intelligent mind & took interest in many issues & also became a committed rose-grower. He was a devoted father & later a very proud grandfather.
