Ernest's parents were Herbert Richard James and Elizabeth James. His mother is listed as his next of kin and was living at Harrisons Pocket via Strathpine, Queensland when Ernest enlisted in August 1915. Ernest was wounded in action and discharged in 1917. He settled in Caboolture, Queensland and married May Smith in 1922. Ernest's older brother, Richard [180] enlisted as well.
