Add my storyBiography contributed by Sydney Technical High School
Price lived on Gulgon Road in Glenfell (4) with his parents Edwin George Smallwood Price and Elizabeth Mary Price, attending Albion Street PS and Sydney Technical HS in his schooling years (1). After he left school, he worked as a Labourer. On the 3rd of December, 1915, he registered to join the army at Cootamundra (2), where in his attestment papers he stated he was born in around June of 1897, making him 18 years and 5 months old. However, Price was actually born in the year 1900 (1), meaning he was only 15 years of age at the time of his application. This small lie showed his eagerness to fight in the war. He was accepted as a Private into the 18th battalion. On the 5th of June a year later in 1916, Price embarked from Sydney to England upon HMAT Kyarra (4).
In October Price was discovered away from his place of duty without leave. He was court martialled and charged with 168 hours of detention (2). He proceeded to France and arrived at Étaples 3 November (2) where became sick after two weeks. From here, records show he suffered from adenoids and was constantly in and out of the hospital, as well as a further injury to his right hand. Price also contracted influenza on 24th of June 1918, where he was sent to Sutton Veny Hospital (2). Furthermore, on the 13th of October, Price failed to follow an order, resulting in a 10 day punishment of intensive labour. In fact, Price often defied orders, receiving many consequences such as field punishments and forfeiture of pay (2). His rebellious nature got him into a lot of trouble.
Fortunately, Price survived the war and on 25 January 1919, he embarked from London to Australia aboard HMAT Delta.
Price arrived home on the 7 March 1919 and was then discharged from the AIF on the 1st of May. He worked as a Clerk and the following year he married Florence Lusk, who was 23 years old (3).In 1936 he changed jobs to become a carpenter (1), where in the following year he appealed to the War Pensions Entitlement Appeal Tribunal, claiming to have chronic pharyngitis recognised as a war-related disability. In his words, Price states “I was operated on for the complaint (meaning Pharyngitis) whilst on service in 1916 at Tidworth, England. After this operation I embarked for France and saw service during November 1916”, where he tried to request a war pension. The outcome of this application is unknown (2). By 1963, Price changed his job once again to become a ships joiner. Sadly, Darcy Edwin Price passed away on October 10 in 1967 at the age of 67.
