22 Sep 1917: | Honoured Military Medal, On 20th September, 1917, at HOOGE, was on duty with the Liaison Officer who accompanied the Battalions detailed for the capture of the final objective. This telephonist remained throughout the whole operation, at his post, being the only survivor of a party of five, the remainder having been wounded or become otherwise detached. His services proved of great value and he materially assisted the Liaison Officer in transmitting his information. Bombardier MASHMAN displayed throughout a complete disregard for his own safety in spite of having been subjected to an unusually heavy enemy shell and machine gun fire. He had on several occasions to carry messages by hand through a heavy enemy barrage, a task which he performed courageously and successfully.' George Barnier Mashman (Service Number 19114) was born on February in 1895 in a hospital located in Concord. He grew up with his father, George Mashman, mother and younger brother. Hailing from Rockdale, he proved to be somewhat of a capable soldier gaining articles written about his contributions in the Commonwealth Gazette1. George spent most of his childhood in Rockdale, attending a local primary school before seeking further education in Sydney Technical High School (est. 1911). George eventually graduated at around the age of 17-18 and pursued a career as a clerk, a job that was quite common at the time and one that his brother, Harold Mashman would eventually be employed in. George Mashman was well built and stood at 6.5 Feet, which was above average at the time and enlisted at the age of 20. George enlisted on the 1st of December 1915 and embarked on 11 May of the following year. George Mashman, now an Australian Soldier, was placed in the 107th Australian Howitzer Battery as a Gunner (a role that is similar to a private). From there on out, he would assist the infantry as Fire support, eventually achieving the rank of Bombardier sometime between 1916-1917. Bombardier Mashman was stationed overseas near the French town of Ypres and the Hooge. The full list of armed engagements that Bombardier Mashman took part in is unknown but, due to where he was stationed and the timeframe that he was stationed there, it can be assumed that he took part in the 3rd or 4th Battle of Ypres. Additionally, due to the company that he was placed in, it can also be assumed that he also took part in the Battle of Hill 60 and the Battle of Messiness. Through combat, Mashman would receive a Military medal on the 24th of May 1918 for bravery in the field, recommendations from superiors and his name in two publications which were the London Gazette2 and the Commonwealth Gazette. George Barnier Mashman and his company, equipped with new 4.5” Howitzers3, would continue to fight until the end of the war on the 11th of November 1918. George returned home unscathed, a fate that was monumentally lucky, and continued to live the rest of his life as a normal Australian man until his death at an unknown time.
