Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

William Leslie Carney enlisted in May 1915 and left Australia a month later. He was taken on strength of the 3rd Battalion on 4 August 1915, a couple of days before the Battle of Lone Pine.

He was at first reported missing from 7-12 August 1915, before he turned up in Malta on 24 August 1915 with a shell splinter wound to his left eye. He was evacuated to England during September 1915 and admitted to the City of London Military Hospital. He was invalided to Australia due to the wounded eye during December 1915. His service from enlistment was less than seven months.

During April 1918 he enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy as 6492 Stoker William Leslie Carney and he served in the Navy for over 23 years, being discharged during 1941.

In 1933 he was awarded the RAN Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
