Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Albert Edward Reiman enlisted in the 9th Battalion with his brother Herbert Reiman. They were given consecutive regimental numbers in the unit and both transferred to the 49th Battalion before they saw their first action at Pozieres during 1916. Albert was recommended for an award during the fighting around Mouquet Farm in September 1916, for stretcher bearing, when in two days fighting, over 300 casualties had to be removed from the battlefield.

He was rapidly promoted during 1917, going from Corporal to Company Sergeant Major in a six-month period. He was awarded a Military Medal during the fighting at Polygon Wood in Belgium.

“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In the advance on Passchendaele Ridge, north east of Ypres, on 26th September, 1917, he was in charge of a Stokes Ammunition carrying party in the attack on enemy position. He kept the front-line guns supplied with ammunition the whole period the guns were in the line. His great coolness, courage, and ability, under very heavy fire inspired his party with great confidence.”

His brother 2645 Private Ernest Reiman also of the 49th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Dernancourt on 5 April 1918, age 23.

Albert was promoted to Lieutenant late in 1918 after attending an officer cadet course at Oxford College. He returned to Australia in May 1919.
