Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 19th July 1916, Private Sylvester James Gollan, referred to as Jim, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-4051), railways labourer from 4 Tighes Terrace, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, was Killed in Action by a high explosive shell during the Battle of Fromelles, age 21.

Born at Muswellbrook, New South Wales on the 15th June 1895 to John Allen (John James or Jack, died 15.8.1924, Bellingen, N.S.W., age 57, laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the Sunday of the 17.8.1924, no funeral or death notice located) and Catherine (Kate) Theresa Gollan nee Dolahenty (died 9.9.1942, Rockdale, N.S.W., mother of 7, age 70) of Victoria Street, Taree, New South Wales, Jim enlisted on the 27th August 1915 with the 1st Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT Mooltan on the 11th December 1915.

Disembarked at Marseilles, France 28.6.1916.
3 weeks in the field.

Reported Missing in Action 19.7.1916.

Reported Killed in Action 2.9.1917.

Jim’s name has been inscribed on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France. Memorial No 8.

Place of Association - Wickham, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr. Gollan’s name has also been inscribed on the Wickham (Hawkins Oval) Soldiers' Memorial, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), Durrumbul Main Arm Public School Honor Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the NSW Govt Railways and Tramways Roll of Honour, 1914-1919.

I have placed poppies at the Gollan memorialised gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son Jim for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 1-29. 55.
