John William Murphy, was born on the 18th February, 1844, in Alberton, South Australia. He was a farmer by trade. Murphy married Ida Wilson on the 18th January 1915, the year after the war began.

Murphy enlisted with the AIF on 9th December, 1914 and embarked on the HMAT Itonus A50 on the 15th February, 1915. Murphy served as a Private initially but was promoted to Sergeant on the 1st March, 1916. Murphy fought with the 12th Infantry Battalion and then the 52nd Battaliton during his 3 years and 80 days in service. Murphy was discharged on the 27th February, 1918, with his release papers stating that he was ‘Medically unfit' (not due to misconduct). 

John Murphy returned home and established a family with Ida. Murphy died at the age of 66, survived by his wife, son Jack and daughter Lynette.
