Biography contributed by Michael Silver

A native of Parramatta, Thomas Henry Harvey (known as ‘Jim’) was one of twelve children of Welshman Thomas Henry Harvey Snr and his English wife Helen Elizabeth Ogborne.

His parents came to Australia from Britain in 1882. In 1892 his father graduated with a diploma, with merit, as a Master Plumber from Sydney Technical College. In 1895 he purchased the plumbing and tank making section of Murray Bros. and set up business alongside JH Murray at 117-123 Church St Parramatta. The business was called TH Harvey & Co – the forerunner of a multi-disciplined hardware, plumbing, engineering and fabrication business that has span over 125 years and evolved into Harvey Industries.

Born at Parramatta in 1893 and educated at Parramatta South Public School [now Arthur Philip High School], Jim Harvey entered the family plumbing and engineering business after leaving school. However, in October 1916 he enlisted for service with the A.I.F.; he was almost 23 years old. Assigned to the 4th Field Artillery Brigade, he embarked for overseas in May 1917 in the HMAT A9 Shropshire and was transferred to France the following November. Jim Harvey returned to Australia and the family business in July 1919. In April 1920 he married Florence May Rand at Sydney - the couple were to have three children.

Upon his father’s death in 1932, Thomas Henry Harvey Jnr succeeded him as Managing Director of the company, which became known as T.H. Harvey and Sons Ltd. He became a prominent member of the Parramatta business community and served several terms on Parramatta council, becoming Deputy Mayor from 1940-1943. He was also a founding member of the Rotary Club of Parramatta.

The business empire flourished and expanded under his guidance but in the 1960s he passed management to the next generation of the family.

Thomas Henry Harvey Jnr died at Parramatta in 1974 at the age of 80 – his wife, Florence, passing away four years later.
