Gunner Cedric James William Mowat was born in 1890, the son of Willliam Cormack MOWAT and Annie Elizabeth Barnes.  He was the eldest of two sons.  While his father died a few years after he was born his mother remarried George STRACHAN when Cedric was 11 years old.  Another  brother was born in 1902.

Cedric's brother, Gunner Reginald Henry MOWAT enlisted in 1916 in the Fifth Divisional Ammunition Column.
