Private Cedric (Syd) James William Mowat served in the 4th Battalion of the 2nd Australian Field Artillery Brigade, during World War I. Enlisting on the 2nd of March 1916 he participated in the war in France and Belgium.
Mowat was born on the 11th of January 1890 in Adelaide, South Australia. He was the eldest son of William Cormack Mowat and Annie Elizabeth Barnes. Cedric's father died a few years after he was born, his mother remarried to George Stratchan when Cedric was 11 years old and in 1902 another brother was born. Cedric attended Prince Alfred College in Adelaide. He became a farmer in Carpa, Franklin Harbour, South Australia.
Cedric enlisted in the 8th Pioneer Battalion the 2nd of March 1916, he was a tall man, over 6 foot and aged 26 years. He embarked on the HMAT/A Aenaeas on the 11th of April 1916. Private Mowat arrived in Suez on the 15th of May 1916 and spent time training in Alexandria.
Private Mowat was transferred to the Australian Army Training Depot, based in England and attended Officer's Training School from 26th November 1916 at No 1 camp of the Australian Army Training Depot. He returned to fight in France on the 25th of April 1917 and was marched out to the 1st Divisional Australian Field Artillery.
Gunner Cedric Mowat was deployed to Zillebeke Belgium to fight at the battle of Ypres. On 1st August 1917 he was a Battery runner and was killed by a bomb explosion whilst taking communications between batteries.
He has no known grave and is honoured on the Menin Gate (Ypres, Belgium) the Cowell War Memorial and many other memorials in the Franklin Harbour District.
Cedric's brother, Gunner Reginald Henry MOWAT enlisted in 1916 in the Fifth Divisional Ammunition Column and returned from service in Aprl 1918.

Cedric attended Prince Alfred College in Adelaide and later in his life he became a Farmer.

He spent time training in Alexandria. He was hospitalised for an unknown condition in July 1916 and was sent to England. He was transferred to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion at the Australian Army Training Depot. He attended Officer's Training School from 26th November 1916 at the No 1 camp of the Australian Army Training Depot. He returned to fight in France 25/4/17 and marched out to the 1st Divisional Australian Field Artillery. He moved to Belgium to fight at Ypres and was killed in action 1st August 1917
