Cyril Henry Thomas Bennett was born on the 23 November 1898 in Adelaide South Australia to parents Emma May Denford and Henry Thomas Bennett. He had a brother called Edward Denford John Bennett. Cyril's mother died in 1907 and his father remarried Priscilla Elizabeth Blythman in 1909. He attended Terowie Public School. At the time of enlistment he was employed as a Cleaner with the South Australian Railways. As per his Attestation Papers, he stated his religious denomination as a Baptist.
Cyril was 18 and a half at the time of enlistment, which was 25/4/1916. His standing height was 5’9, with a weight of 138 lbs. His papers describe that he had brown hair, and a fresh complexion.
Cyril embarked from Adelaide to the United Kingdom on the Seang Bee 13 of July 1916. He was taken on strength with the 43 Battalion 25 October 1916 and proceeded to France from Southampton 25 November 1916. He was detached to school in April 1917 (likely for further military training) after which he rejoined the 43rd Battalion a few days later. He was grated leave to England in February 1918 and returned to France in March. He again fell ill with a fever in June 1918 and requred a few days treatment and rest before returning to his unit. Once again in August he was will with a fever and after initial treatment in France was sent to hospital in England.
He then returned to Australia aboard the HT Nestor on the 12 of December 1918 and was later discharged on 21st of August 1919.
His last service record indicates he left after serving in the 43rd battalion, receiving no promotional changes during his war service. After the war he married Mary Isabel Pinch in 1930. He went on to live to the age of 71 and passed away 2 August 1970 at Daw Park. He was buried in Pasadena, City of Mitcham, South Australia.
