Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

James Curtin was born in Melbourne and enlisted at Blackboy Hill in Western Australia at over 45 years of age. His father had passed away when he was only three years of age and he was raised by his mother, Mary Curtin.

James was one of the almost 200 men of the 51st Battalion who perished in the last Australian attack on Mouquet Farm. He was listed as missing after the action. During 1923 his remains were found by the Imperial War Graves Commission, identified by the presence of a water proof sheet with his name on it. His mother, Mary, was well over 90 years of age when his body was found.
