Son of William Pitt Vance and Mary Salome Vance nee Kennedy of Barrine, Cairns, QLD. Brother of William Leonard Vance who returned to Australia on 8 May 1919 having served with the 42nd Battalion.
Commenced return to Australia on 1 May 1919 aboard HT China disembarking on 11 June 1919 at Sydney for onward travel to Brisbane
