Biography

"CARRIED BULLET, Since Anzac Landing. X-Ray Disclosure.

BRISBANE. September 15. Ever since the morning of the landing at Gallipoli Arthur Coombs, of Toombul, formerly of the 9th Battalion, has carried close to his spine a bullet from a Mauser rifle, but until last week he knew nothing of it. He entered hospital last week for an operation for an internal complaint and an X-ray disclosed the presence of a bullet. Mr. Coombs said that he was struck near the leg and shoulder at the landing but felt little pain and later in the morning was hit in the foot and was put out of action. The foot wound kept him out of the line for a month, but doctors took little notice of the other wounds. He fought through the rest of the war without being injured." - from the Cairns Northern Herald 17 Sep 1938 (nla.gov.au)
