Updated biography of About Albert Cooper, 26 April 2025
by Yvonne Cooper (granddaughter-in-law of Albert Cooper)
Albert Cooper and his brother William were orphaned 22 April 1898. They were placed into care by their grandmother, Mary Jane Purcell (nee Weavers) on 29 June 1899, giving their parents as Edward T Purcell (dead) and Elizabeth Cooper (dead) children left in care of grandmother Mary J Purcell, Fitzroy street, Dubbo. Ref Albert No.2871 and William No.2872, see attachment.
Their birth certificates state their births were illegitimate. Their mother was Elizabeth Cooper (nee Vidler) no father named. They were born in Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia. As Albert was only 4 years old when put into care, it is likely he did not know where he was born. That information does not appear on the records of their care. The brother listed as his next of kin, George William Cooper (1873-1939) was his half-brother, son of Elizabeth Cooper (nee Vidler) and George William Cooper.
NSW records of children going into care and DNA results have confirmed that Albert was the son of Edwin Thomas Purcell. Albert Cooper is listed on the Honour Rolls of the Federation Of First Fleeters, (Sydney) for WW1, WW2, and the BCOF British Occupation Forces of Japan.
His son, Ronald Michael Cooper appears on the Roll for WW2 and his grandson, John Frank Cooper appears on the Roll for Vietnam
