Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Lieutenant Cyril Braden Maddocks served in the AIF and joined the RFC with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith on 16 March 1917. Maddocks had a bad crash in England, in 1919, which split his skull from eye to back of head, and left him unconscious for ten days. A difficult operation saved his life. His friendship with Smith was like that of a brother. His vision for the future of aviation was very similar to that of his friend and he dreamed of future ventures in Australia. Just after the war the two friends formed Kingsford Smith, Maddocks Aeros Ltd., flying a joy-riding service mainly in the North of England, during the summer of 1919. Tasmanian born Maddocks had enlisted in Western Australia with the 16th Battalion during 1915.
