Biography contributed by Robyn Bury

Reginald enlisted as a 20 year old Driver from Warracknabeal. He served for 2 years in the Citzen Military Forces, Warracknabeal and was still serving at time of AIF enlistment with the 21st Battalion on the 6th April 1915. Embarking from Australia on the 8th May 1915 on board HMAT Ulysses (A38) he was promoted to Corporal on the 25th September 1915.

The 21st battalion was transferred to Gallipoli in late August 1915 but the battalion’s transport, HMT Southland, was torpedoed by a German submarine near the island of Lemnos and had to be beached with the loss of 40 men. The battalion finally landed at Anzac Cove on the 7th September. It had a relatively quiet time at Gallipoli, as the last major Allied offensives had been defeated in August.

Transferred to a Trench Mortar Battery on the 15th April 1916 he was accidently wounded three months later on the 24th July 1916 whilst attending a Stokes Mortar demonstration and hospitalised for six weeks. In January 1917 he was admitted to the Field Ambulance Unit with VD and transferred back to Base General Hospital at Etaples for 52 days.

He was promoted to Temporary Sergeant on the 1st June 1917 and appears to have been transferred to the 6th Engineering Battalion. He returned to Australia on the 2nd January 1919 and discharged on the 11th April 1919.
