Edward Joseph MCGARRY (Service Number 4920) was born on 13th February 1880 at Kelso. He first worked for the NSW Government Railways as a casual fuelman at Bathurst Locomotive Depot from 14th April 1911. His designation was changed to temporary in August and permanent in October 1911. It was from this position that he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 21st October 1915.
McGarry enlisted at Bathurst a week later. He claimed two years apprenticeship with Brown and Curry, Coach Painters of Bathurst. He gave his wife, Susan,, as his next of kin.
At first he was allotted to the 15th Reinforcements to the 13th Battalion. He embarked HMAT ‘Star of England’ at Sydney on 8th March 1916, reaching Egypt on 11th April. He was immediately transferred to the 4th Pioneer Battalion. In June he embarked ‘Scotian’ at Alexandria for passage He went through Marseilles to join the British Expeditionary Force in France. In September he was sick with Influenza and admitted to the 13th Australian Field Ambulance and then transferred to the Divisional Rest Station. He recovered quickly and was discharged to duty after only a few days, on 4th October.
On 12th December he was wounded in the chest by a high explosive shell and died the next day at the 38th Casualty Clearing Station, Heilly, France. He was buried in the cemetery adjacent to the hospital, 2½ miles NNE of Corbie.
Edward Joseph and Susan Ann McGarry had two sons, Edward James and Harold Stanley.
