Uncollected War Medals
At the end of WWI, the issuing of war medals took place during the early 1920's. For deceased soldiers medals were sent to their chosen next of kin. William Maher nominated his sister Mrs Dwyer of Napier St Fitzroy Victoria as his next of kin upon enlistment.
The army, as well as the police, were unable to locate Mrs Dwyer to receive the issues of William's medals. On 8 October 1920 (NAA p.34) the Officer in Charge of Army Base Records, Major Lean marked William's file as "untraceable" and his medals were returned to storage.
