Son of Alfred Charles Oates and Keziah Gemmerson Oates nee Harper of Mountain River, Huon, Tasmania.
Brother of Allen Thomas Oates who returned to Australia on 20 February 1920 having served with the 40th Battalion
Commenced return to Australia on 16 December 1917 aboard HS Kanowna disembarking on 13 February 1918 at Melbourne for onward travel to Hobart.
