George William Jessop was born in July 1896 in Brunswick, Victoria and spent his childhood growing up in Launceston, Tasmania. In August 2nd, 1915, George enlisted into the Australian army when he was only 19 years old, he was assigned to the 12th Australian Infantry Battalion with the service number of 3153 and on October 16th, 1915 he embarked to go to war from Melbourne as the rank of a Private. George fought in the war all the way through. He changed battalions by the end of the war, being a part of the 10th Field Artillery Brigade and being promoted to the rank of Gunner. He was discharged on the 7th August 1919 back to Australia at the age of 23 after fighting in the war.
